MY FAMILY
By Vanessa Bell Calloway

Family is very important to me. It's the one entity of my life that means the most. I would never trade any amount of fame for the security of having a solid family. Notoriety comes and goes but if your lucky; your family is always there.

I have been blessed with a marriage of nineteen years to my wonderful husband, Dr. Anthony M. Calloway. Twenty years ago when I met him at a comedy club I knew immediately that I was in love. It was just something about his smile and the way he walked. I knew that I wanted to be involved in his life in a major way. It wasn't until after our first date that I knew he would be my husband. I know that sounds corny, but we went on one date and we have never been apart. He has been an incredible force in my journey and I know I am a better person because of him. We have two beautiful daughters and they have been a tremendous blessing as well. Raising children can be the best adventure and the hardest job you'll encounter in your life.

Although parenting can be challenging it's also a lot of fun. I have a great time with my girls and their crew. When I'm not working the majority of my time is now spent hangin out with Ashley and Ally. It's not only fun but also it is informative and educational. I keep abreast of all the latest songs that blast the airwaves and I even know most of the artists' names. I'm never at a lost for new dance steps and I hear most of the hot Hollywood gossip. Because the newest slang is quite important, I am thoroughly rehearsed to make sure it sounds correct and natural coming from someone old school like me.

Ashley once told me "Mom, when someone comes up to you and ask you a question, you say "What you know about dat." It never occurred to her that even an old lady like me had heard this song by T.I. on the radio. When I used the expression, I was an instant hit. Ashley was impressed that I said it so cool and with ease.

I love children's naïveté. They think you were never young or hip. They never quite grasp just how much parents can teach them about the ultimate cool! My cell phone ring tone stays current. I'll rock anything from Kanye West to It's Goin' Down. I know what tasty dishes to prepare for picky preteens and teens alike, and I am a hit at every visit because of it.

My family is the light of my life! I know that I am incredibly blessed to have them and I cherish each and every moment that God has created for us to share. I look forward to the rest of my life with my husband and I'm excited for my daughters and their futures. Together as a family we are strong, and I always pray that our love and belief in each other will make us even stronger apart.
